MAJOR CHANGES FOR HIGH GOAL

By Ron Allen

As the first leg of the Argentine Triple Crown gets underway this week in Argentina several new rule changes have been put in place. All six teams in the first tournament at Tortugas will be adjusting to shorter chukkers. They are now six and one half minutes instead of seven and one half minutes. Additional changes include: a two minute suspension for a second yellow card, 30 yard penalty shots will be undefended, if the game is tied at the end of regulation time - play will continue until the winning goal is scored. There will be time limit of twenty seconds for a player to hit a penalty shot. When the ball is knocked over the boards play will resume with a free hit for the team that did not hit the ball out of play. The Asociaion Argentina de Polo will review the changes after Tortugas to determine if the new rules will be applied for Hurlingham and the Open.

Once again this year La Dolfina (40) and Ellerstina (39) will be the favorites in all three tournaments. Adolfo Cambiaso’s La Dolfina team is the defending champion of the Triple Crown with the Pieres clan of Ellerstina hoping that an improvement in horses will help them with their offensive attack.

The four challengers are: Alegria (35) with Facundo Sola replacing injured Lucas Monteverde. The Astradas, all rated at 8 goals, will be wearing the Orange La Aguada shirts once again. They will be playing off 32 goals. Last year’s newcomer Cira Yatay (31) returns with high hopes of at least making it to the semi-finals of the Argentine Open once again. Rounding out the tournament is the much-improved La Irenita (31). They played off a 29-goal handicap last year.
