From a gentleman's weekend

Gina M Capone August 29th 2016

From a gentleman's weekend gathering at the club to an internet generation, High Goal Polo should be getting a modern buzz. If the old and the new could only mingle, well Polo could be enjoyed by the masses, or at least entertain the ones who are its fans. But just like any good idea, it takes a cohesiveness to get to play.

Professional Polo Players need more options in 2016. It’s hard to make a buck in the horse business, but that doesn’t stop people from trying to live the life. There are many top professional polo players that would like more options in the business, and the industry should stand behind them. Preserving the horse industry in every way whether it be Dressage, Show-Jumping, Driving, Racing, or POLO, should be the base of the reasoning, not only that, for the horses sake, unity is always the best policy.

Wellington, Florida has been the birthplace of the international horse scene for over thirty years. It has seen its share of change, and now again this year, polo fields have been sold for development. I ask, “Will there still be a place for us to congregate, where the best horses and riders walk down the aisle of the barns and the aisle of the same grocery store?” Displacing a community who thrives to sit on their horses each day, moving toward their goals, ignores the fundamental aspect of horse life, where land is needed to house horses, in order to have a community of horses and riders. But the riders are not always the ones who are financially able to protect the land. Progress lies in the ideas of the best business minds, where with opportunity, something new happens.

Out of the old, a new spin puts POLO out on the field exhibiting the best riders and horses. Professionals compete for a purse and the professionals sign up. Life in Wellington is much like life in other places, but it has been the birthplace of the professional polo player. It has helped promote many players and their rise to the top and the changing course of their lives, in the last twenty-years, and this hasn’t just been American players but the world class group who congregate here in the season.

From high society and social class to the muddy britches and boots of a rider, horse sports in general should take a look inwards in order to birth new ideas to preserve our way of life. The concern of the horse is at stake, the opportunity to practice our craft, and the preservation of our land should entice us to put our heads together and grow a venue, support that venue, and see it grow, where professionals have more options. Gina M Capone Polo is out of balance according to 10 goal great Gonzalo Pieres.
